Winter Rowing Essentials

It’s that time of year again, winter is in full swing. Dark nights, cold air, and frozen fingertips clinging to the oars quickly become part of the routine.
While winter rowing can be rewarding, it’s also a time when the risks increase. Low light, cold water, and dropping temperatures mean injuries and accidents are more likely if we’re not careful. Rowing in the dark or dealing with cold exposure and hypothermia are real concerns, so taking extra care both on and off the water really matters.

Here are some winter tips and tricks to help keep you warm, safe, and still enjoying your rowing through the colder months.

1. Keeping warm

You’ve probably heard this one before but, no one ever really explains how to stay warm or what actually works. Using the right base layers and jackets can make a huge difference.

A good performance base layer, like those made with GS-EVO lycra, is designed to keep you warm and dry by managing moisture and wicking sweat away from the skin. Keeping your core warm is key, if your body’s happy, the rest usually follows.

2. Be seen, be safe

Early mornings and late-night sessions often mean limited visibility, which can put you and other crews, at risk. Boat lights are essential, but they’re not always enough and can sometimes be missed, especially from a distance.

Wearing high-visibility clothing helps make sure you’re seen well before anyone gets too close. Godfrey’s Be Seen collection uses fluorescent yellow and pink pigments that reflect light effectively, making it easier for coaches and other crews to spot you regardless of conditions.

3. Protection from the elements

Winter brings plenty of challenges, but the cold is usually the biggest one. Frozen fingers and icy splashback can quickly ruin both rhythm and morale.

Thankfully, there’s plenty of kit to help you stay warm from head to toe. Pogies are great for keeping hands warm while sweeping or sculling and with so many colour options, they can even match your outfit.

G2 splash jackets are another winter staple, keeping you dry even when the splashback gets aggressive. Designed specifically for rowers, they feature an extended back tail and side pockets, so they stay out of the way while you row.
